Good and Evil Represented in the Disney Princesses

Defining good and evil has been linked with individual intention and
benefits that accrue from a certain action. Therefore, a person can be
categorized as good or evil, depending on his actions an action that is
believed to cause harm to another person or a group can be categorized
as evil while an action that is believed to benefit an individual or a
group can be categorized as being good (Angle, 2004). It is not only
actions that can be categorized as being good or evil, but also the
intention. Hence, the intention to do an action that will benefit others
can be categorized as good while an intention to do harm is categorized
as evil. In philosophy, evil implies great human destructiveness. It may
emerge in an obvious form like genocide, or it may emerge in small acts
of continuous harm doing such as parents being punitive and hostile.
Besides, the evil may be represented by actions that are believed
unacceptable to humans for example, killing. On the other hand,
goodness implies bringing about immense benefits to an individual or
group. It may also emerge in an obvious form like a heroic effort of
saving someone’s life, or in small persistent acts (Angle, 2004). In
the Disney Princesses, different forms of good and evil emerge In this
assignment, good and evil will be discussed in regard to Disney
Princesses.
In the Disney Princesses, the representation of the good emerges in
different instances. One of the ways that the good is represented in the
Disney Princesses is through friendship. Friendship is portrayed, where
Snow White came across the Seven Dwarves. They took her in and looked
after her she did the same for them. This is an indication of
friendship, which represents the good since both parties benefit from
the friendship. Snow White did not need to be in a big castle in order
to be happy she just required to be besieged by good people. Friendship
is also portrayed throughout the Disney Princesses since there are
different depictions of friendships that lead to love and marriage. For
instance, in the case of Cinderella and the prince. It is due to
friendship that they have that eventually leads them to marriage, which
is a benefit to them both.
The good is also represented in the Disney Princesses by the virtue of
love, which is also throughout the Disney Princess. Love as a virtue is
of benefit to individuals since it does not hurt, but benefits. An
individual that loves does not have ill intentions towards other people
as portrayed in the Disney Princesses. For instance, although Cinderella
was treated horribly by her step sisters and step mother, she did not
resent them for it (Skea, 2006). In fact, she did not in any way plot
against them or hate them she always loved them. This is a
representation of the good. Another instance, portrayed in the Disney
Princesses that show love that does not hurt entails, where the prince
still loves Cinderella even without the pumpkin coach and pretty dress.
This is an indication that the princess did not have any hurting
intentions towards Cinderella, which is a representation of the good. On
the other hand, because of love for her father, Belle is ready to engage
in an abusive relationship so as to save her father. Belle becomes
kidnapped by a hideous monster, but rather than hating the monster she
still loves him so as to save her father. This is a representation of
good as it is of benefit to Belle’s father. In addition, the depiction
of love in the Disney Princesses is portrayed, where Snow White is also
hated by her step mother to an extent of wanting to kill her however,
Snow White did not have ill intentions towards her step mother (Reader`s
Digest, 2009). This is a representation of good overcoming the evil
since she could have plotted against her step mother but instead did
not. Instead of plotting harm against her, she hid herself away.
Another way that the good is represented in the Disney Princesses is
through kindness. A kind person will always remain good despite the
actions against him or her. In the Disney Princesses, Belle is
represented as being kind. Although she becomes kidnapped by the
monster, who treats her in an abusive manner she still showed love to
the monster. This is a show of kindness, which is a representation of
good since it does not harm others. Very few people are capable of
reciprocating hatred with kindness, but since Belle did it this shows
that the good overcame the evil in the Disney Princesses. In fact,
despite the emotions of being kidnapped and treated badly, she still had
a strong heart of showing love to the monster so as to save her father.
This shows her kindness, which was beneficial to the father. Snow White
was also kind to the dwarves since she sacrificed to cook and clean for
them. Through her kindness, the dwarves benefited. Therefore, this was a
representation of the good.
The good is also represented in the Disney Princesses through the virtue
of strong will. Individuals that are strong willed have the ability to
do make their own decisions that positively transform their lives or the
lives of others. Therefore, strong will is a depiction of good since it
leads to the benefits of an individual or a group. In the Disney
Princesses, Jasmine is depicted as being strong willed since she fights
in making her own choices. Through her strong will, she does not follow
Alladin’s riches, but instead wanted to become married to a person
that she loved. Her actions benefitted herself and the man she married
since they married because of love and not riches. In addition, the good
in the Disney Princesses is represented through saving the lives of
others. For instance, Ariel is depicted as a hero after she saved a man
from the storm. Besides, Belle is portrayed as a hero after she decides
to love a monster that kidnapped her so as to save her father (Betz,
2006). In addition, the prince that meets Cinderella is also portrayed
as a hero since he saves Cinderella from her slavery treatment of her
stepmother. In all these cases, there is the representation of good
since individuals become saved from horrible situations. Furthermore,
positive personality is used in the Disney Princesses to represent the
good. This is depicted, where Ariel through her positive personality,
abandons her family and gives up on her talent, and drastically changes
her body for a man she has just once. Her personality is for the benefit
of the man, who she saved once from the storm.
Apart from the good being represented in the Disney Princesses, the evil
is also represented. One of the ways that the evil is represented is
through the prince Charming portrayed kissing a pretty girl that was in
a coffin (Reader`s Digest, 2009). The society does not believe in normal
people kissing the dead unless somebody is a vampire. The kissing of the
dead girl is a representation of evil since such an action is not
generally accepted and depicts disrespect for the dead. It could be
acceptable in case prince Charming was a vampire, but in this case the
prince is not a vampire, which is an indication of rotten morals that is
associated with the evil.
Hatred is another way the evil is represented in the Disney Princesses.
Hatred is evil since it makes individuals think of doing harm to others.
For example, due to hatred, a person may think of killing another.
Hatred in the Disney Princesses is depicted to emerge from some
individuals being more beautiful than others. This makes the less
beautiful individuals think of harming the beautiful ones. For example,
in the Disney Princesses, Snow White is depicted as being more beautiful
than her step mother. This makes her step mother have an evil plot of
killing her, although she does not succeed. The indication that the step
mother tried to kill her is a clear depiction of an evil action
therefore, this represents the evil in Disney Princesses. Besides, since
Cinderella is prettier than her step sisters and step mother, she
receives hatred from the parties.
Treating a person like a slave is evil since it hurts the person being
treated as a slave. In the Disney Princesses, there is a representation
of the evil through slavery. In the Disney Princesses, this is depicted,
where Cinderella is treated like a slave by her step sisters and step
mother because of the mere reason that she is prettier than them.
Through treating her like a slave, Cinderella is hurt because she does
not deserve to act like one. Besides, ill treatment is another way of
representing evil in the Disney Princesses. In the Disney Princesses,
Belle is kidnapped by a monster and treated badly in her relationship
(Betz, 2006). Jasmine has also been mistreated, where she almost had her
hand chopped off because of giving a kid an apple. This represents a way
of hurting other individuals, which is taken as evil. Individuals that
are rich are depicted to mistreat others for example, the man in a
relationship with Belle is rich this is the reason that makes him abuse
the relationship that they have.
Another way that the evil has been represented in the Disney Princesses
is through sexuality. It is an unacceptable action to use one’s
sexuality in distracting other people or turning things in one’s
favor. This is evil since it hurts other people. Despite it is morally
wrong in society to use one’s sexuality in seducing others. In the
Disney Princesses, this has been portrayed by Jasmine. Jasmine is of the
opinion that it is possible to obtain anything through using her
sexuality and seducing men (Reader`s Digest, 2009). Jasmine uses her
looks in distracting people, and as a result turns things in her favor.
This is a representation of the evil. Due to her sexuality, she refuses
to marry a man that wants her and falls for another man, who she seduces
through her looks.
In the Disney Princesses, the evil has been represented through the use
of a Mermaid. A mermaid is not a full human, but she is portrayed in the
Disney Princesses to act like a full human. She is associated with the
sea. After the mermaid noticed a good man that she saved after a storm,
she is ready to change herself in order to make the man love her. In
fact, the mermaid turns into a full human, which is an indication that
there were some evil powers involved in changing a mermaid into a human.
This is a representation of the evil besides, turning oneself into what
one is not represents an unacceptable behavior that may be associated
with cheating and taking advantage of a situation, which is also evil.
Besides, the evil is represented in the Disney Princesses, where it is
depicted that money and looks can fix everything. This is evil since
people tend to worship money since it can do everything for them. For
example, the godmother of Cinderella believes that through using the
money and makeovers towards Cinderella will fix everything since she
will be capable of finding a man to marry her (Skea, 2006) this is what
exactly happens. This is also portrayed by the man that kidnaps Belle
he believes that because he has money he can do anything including
becoming violent and abusive. Besides, because of his riches, Alladin
thinks that he can be capable of winning Jasmine and marry her. All
these cases indicate that money is taken as everything, which is evil.
In addition, the evil is represented in the Disney Princesses through
the depiction of witches and action of the evil powers. The evil power
is depicted to cause harm to individuals makings them suffer. For
example, Tiana has been turned into a frog by a voodoo master, which
makes her incapacitated to do everything by herself. It is after she is
turned into a frog that she opts to seek the assistance of other fellow
human-turned-frog. On the other hand, the evil powers are depicted,
where Jasmine has to defeat the evil Jafar before she can enjoy her
marriage. In addition, the involvement of the evil spirit is depicted,
where Ariel falls into the arms of the Sea Witch Ursula that agrees to
change her in three days, but takes off her ability to speak.
Furthermore, in the Disney Princesses, Aurora is depicted as being
visited by an evil spirit that curses her die on her 16th birthday. All
these actions of the evil powers represent the evil since they lead to
suffering of an individual.
Although there is a representation of the evil in the Disney Princesses,
the good overpowers the evil. There are different circumstances, which
show that the evil has been overpowered by the good. For example, after
the Aurola’s curse by Maleficient, the curse is defeated by Prince
Phillips kiss. Besides, although the stepmother and stepsisters of
Cinderella treats Cinderella as a slave, she is later saved from slavery
after she met her lucky suitor (Skea, 2006). The same case applies to
Snow White, where flees home after her stepmother tried to kill her and
meets friendly dwarves. The good also overpowers the evil since after
Belle becomes kidnapped, she is kind enough to show love amidst an
abusive relationship (Betz, 2006). In addition, although Tiana is
changed into a frog, she is capable of meeting her suitor belonging to
the same cohort as her.
Conclusion
An action that is believed to cause harm to another person or a group
can be categorized as evil while an action that is believed to benefit
an individual or a group can be categorized as being good. In
philosophy, evil implies grand human destructiveness. It may emerge in
an obvious form like genocide, or it may emerge in small acts of
continuous harm doing such as parents being punitive and hostile. On the
other hand, goodness implies bringing about immense benefits to an
individual or group. In the Disney princesses, there is the
representation of good and evil in different scenarios. The good is
represented in the Disney Princesses through friendship. Friendship is
portrayed, where Snow White came across the Seven Dwarves. They took her
in and looked after her she did the same for them. The good is also
represented in the Disney Princesses through kindness. Belle is
represented as being kind although she becomes kidnapped by the
monster, who treats her in an abusive manner she still showed love to
the monster. On the other hand, the evil is represented by using
sexuality in seducing others. This has been portrayed by Jasmine.
Jasmine is of the opinion that it is possible to obtain anything through
using her sexuality and seducing men. Jasmine uses her looks in
distracting people, and as a result turns things in her favor. However,
the good overcomes the evil.
